Prevent Overdose

Carry Naloxone

Naloxone is a medication that works to reverse and temporarily block the effects of an opioid overdose.

Everyone should carry naloxone. However, the following people are at higher risk of experiencing an opioid overdose and are especially encouraged to carry naloxone: 

  • People who are taking opioids for management of chronic pain 
  • People living with active opioid use disorder, including their family and friends 
  • People in early recovery following a period of incarceration or residential treatment.

Remember: Lay, Spray, Stay

Most drug overdose deaths involve opioids. If you see signs of an overdose, give naloxone—even if you’re unsure if it is an overdose. Naloxone won’t harm someone who isn’t overdosing on opioids.

Naloxone is a safe, easy-to-use medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. You do not need to be a medical professional to use it.

Remember three simple steps when you think someone is experiencing an overdose: Lay, Stay, Spray.

LAY

Lay the person on their back and tilt their head up. Place your arm behind the back for support.

SPRAY

Insert the tip of the nozzle into one nostril until your fingers are against the bottom of the person's nose. Push the plunger firmly to give the dose.

STAY

Place the person on their side with a hand supporting the head and knees bent.

Call 911 and stay with the person until medical help arrives.

NOTE: Once naloxone wears off, a person can overdose again-another dose may be needed

Recognize the ​Signs of an Overdose
  • Unable to speak/stand
  • Tiny pupils
  • Clammy skin
  • Blue/gray lips and nails
  • Unable to wake up when shaken or yelled at
  • Slowed breathing
  • Gurgling/choking noises
  • Slowed or stopped heartbeat

Where to get Naloxone

Kansas Naloxone Program

DCCCA is providing naloxone (Narcan) nasal spray and fentanyl test strips at no cost to Kansas residents. 

Complete the Naloxone Kit Request Form to request no-cost naloxone and/or fentanyl test strips. 

Naloxone Vending Machine (Wichita)

In Wichita, you can get naloxone at no cost via a vending machine located at:

Over the Counter

You can also buy naloxone (such as Narcan) over the counter or ask for it at a pharmacy counter without needing a doctor's prescription. 
NOTE: The average over-the-counter cost for naloxone can be between $35 and $65.
