Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Fatal Shooting in Sedgwick

SEDGWICK, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Monday morning in the city of Sedgwick.

At approximately 12:06 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, deputies with the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Sedgwick Police Department, responded to a reported shooting in the 100 block of South Commercial Avenue.

First responders found 18-year-old Hunter Johnson of Valley Center suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Sedgwick (city) EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

Law enforcement took a 16-year-old Valley Center juvenile male into custody as the suspected shooter. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office initially reported the suspected shooter was 15 years old. Detectives have since confirmed he is 16.

The preliminary investigation indicates several teenagers were hanging out at the home on South Commercial Avenue when the shooting occurred. The victim and suspected shooter are not related.

Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office detectives continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Additional information will be released when appropriate as the investigation continues.
